Clark Atlanta Hosts Homecoming Battle with Benedict

It's Homecoming game day at Clark Atlanta where the Panthers will be hosting Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East Division foe, Benedict at CAU Panther Stadium at 2 p.m.

The game can be viewed live at www.mybcsn.net/cau.

Clark Atlanta (2-6, 0-4 SIAC) is coming off a 40-7 loss at Fort Valley State last Saturday, while Benedict (3-5, 0-4 SIAC) lost their homecoming game last week to Morehouse, 20-5.

Benedict has won three straight over CAU, with the last time coming in 2019 when CAU lost 31-7 in Columbia, S.C.   Benedict was CAU's homecoming opponent in 2018 when CAU missed opportunities allowed the Tigers to defeat CAU 27-24.

This season, the Tigers are among the SIAC's leaders in pass offense, with 1,917 total passing yards and 239 passing yards per game.  They average 21.2 points per game, good for eighth in the conference.  But as the Benedict offense has sputtered the past two games with only five and six points scored the past two weeks, the Tigers have used four quarterbacks.

Eric Phoenix, the Tigers' leading passer, threw for 289 yards last week against Morehouse, but also had four interceptions.  Zavien Foster, their second leading passer, started two weeks ago but only threw for 98 yards.

Defensively, Benedict allows 18.4 points per game, fourth best in the conference.  Johnnel Swan leads the BC defense with 41 tackles, 26 solo, along with one interception.  Loobert Deneius has made 38 stops, 8.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.  Israel Nwokocha leads them with three sacks.

Clark Atlanta is led defensively by Charles Crawford, who ranks sixth in the SIAC in tackles with 55, 42 of them solo.  He had ten tackles, seven of them solo, last week at Fort Valley State and had a season-high 15 tackles and one interception at Savannah State.

Rodney Lewis leads the CAU defense with three sacks and has made 42 tackles for the Panthers, 30 of them solo, along with eight tackles for losses.

Offensively, the Panthers are still looking for consistency at the quarterback position.  Elijah Odom has led CAU in passing this season with 649 yards and five touchdowns, but he has thrown seven interceptions.  Shariif Brown played more last week, having a tough day with just 44 yards passing with an interception.   Desjaun Kearse also played last week, going 4-of-11 for 59 yards and two interceptions.

Drakar Jerry leads the Panther receiving corps with 26 receptions for 284 yards and three TDs.  Kendell Wimberly has hauled in 17 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns.
