Panthers Outlast Maroon Tigers in Latest Edition of the Battle of the Big Cats

Clark Atlanta finishes regular season with a win over cross-campus rival Morehouse College

ATLANTA, Ga. – In the latest edition of the historic rivalry, the Clark Atlanta Panthers took down the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers 48-45 on Saturday evening at Panther Stadium. With the win, the Panthers finish the regular season 3-7 and extend their win streak to two games over Morehouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Panthers mounted a 21-0 lead over the Maroon Tigers after scoring on three-straight drives in the first quarter. Jalen Samuels punched in the first score on a 39-yard rush followed by a 27-yard touchdown pass from Xzavier Jackson to Ronnie West, and then an 11-yard scamper from Don'te McCall. 
  • Morehouse cut the deficit to 14 with an 11-yard rush at the top of the second quarter for their first score of the day.
  • With 8:19 left to play in the first half, Carlos Lopez booted a 30-yard field goal to extend the Panthers' lead to 24-7.
  • MHC responded with a 59-yard touchdown before Clark Atlanta fired back with a touchdown of their own after Jalen Samuels caught an 18-yard touchdown pass to keep the margin at 31-14 with 5:28 left to play in the second quarter.
  • Both teams tacked on another touchdown in the second quarter, giving Clark Atlanta a 38-21 lead heading into the intermission.
  • The Panthers scored on their first drive of the second half as Jeremiah Gibbs capped off an 11-play, 70 yard drive with a four-yard rush to push CAU to a 45-21 lead. 
  • The Maroon TIgers outscored the Panthers 17-3 in the fourth quarter, but Clark's strong first half proved to be too much to overcome as they held on the win 48-45 over Morehouse.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Xzavier Jackson threw for 298 yards and four touchdowns on 25-of-35 completions to close out a successful freshman campaign.
  • Jalen Samuels led the rushing attack for Clark Atlanta with 73 yards on 10 attempts and one rushing touchdown. Samuels also hauled in an 18-yard receiving touchdown on the day.
  • Ronnie West led the Panthers in receiving yards with 88 yards on six catches and a touchdown. Armone Harris paced all receivers with a game-high nine catches for 79 yards and a touchdown.
  • Eric Searcy led the defensive charge with five touchdowns and a forced fumble.
