CAU (2-5, 0-3 SIAC) is coming off a tough week at Savannah State where they lost 49-14, but for three quarters were right in the game before a late collapse.
This week, they take on a Fort Valley State (4-3, 2-1 SIAC) team that is coming off a 51-3 rout by Morehouse in a game that was held at CAU Panther Stadium last weekend as Morehouse's field undergoes renovation.
The Wildcats had won four in a row, defeating Allen, Benedict, and Central State in successive weeks, averaging 35 points per game and holding the three opposing teams to 20 points or less.
But last week, they had five fumbles and an interception that led to three Morehouse touchdowns and a field goal. Still, FVSU sports the SIAC's third-best passing offense as Tyrell Jackson has thrown for 1,557 yards and 12 touchdowns this season. His top targets have been Erron Price (32 receptions, 396 yards, two touchdowns), Tajee Steele (17 receptions, 290 yards, two touchdowns), Shemar Bridges (24 receptions, 251 yards, one touchdown) and Cordell Pimienta (12 receptions, 214 yards, three touchdowns).
Defensively, FVSU ranks sixth in the conference in total defense and are particularly stout against the run. The Wildcats have the SIAC's top run defense as they are the only conference team to hold opponents to less than 100 yards rushing per game (93.7).
Tyler Moore leads the Wildcats in tackles with 25 stops, along with two interceptions, a sack and a fumble recovery. Antonio Golden and Zaquan Baldwin have split a combined 10.5 sacks this season with Baldwin also forcing three fumbles.
But CAU will be looking to play like they did last week, particularly in the second and third quarters when they threw a scare in SSU. Quarterback
Elijah Odom is eighth in the conference in passing and is ninth in total offense.
His top targets continue to be
Drakar Jerry (24 receptions, 264 yards, three touchdowns) and
Kendell Wimberly (15 receptions, 140 yards, two touchdowns), and
Anthony Brown (10 receptions, 121 yards, one touchdown).
On defense, the Panthers' leading tackler,
Charles Crawford, is coming off a big game in which 11 tackles and interception at Savannah State.
Rodney Lewis has 38 stops, three sacks and eight tackles for loss,
Travis Taylor has 29 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble, and
Timothy Jones has 28 stops, 22 of them solo.
The last time these two teams hooked up was in 2019 when FVSU got two fourth quarter touchdowns to get a comeback 34-27 win. In 2018, the Panthers held on for a close 21-19 victory.
