Box Score Fort Valley, Ga.--The Clark Atlanta University Panthers dropped their first conference game of the season to Fort Valley State University 26-3 on the road in football action Saturday night.
The Panthers (1-2, 0-1) fell behind early in the first quarter 14-0 after the Wildcats scored on two quick strikes. Two big defensive plays by cornerback Dajuan Williams who posted one of his two back-to-back interceptions for a touchdown and Shackl Vandaral's safety gave the Wildcats a 23-0 advantage at the half.
Although struggling offensively to score throughout the game, CAU moved the ball better in the third quarter with 11 first downs and 169 passing yards, but turnovers and a slowed run game with more yards lost than gained (-49) continued to plaque its offense. Kicker Austin Castillas put the Panthers on the board with a 20-yard field goal at the 9:20 mark in the fourth quarter. The Panthers' defense, however, had a few big stops and held the Wildcats offense scoreless through two quarters and much of the fourth quarter before a late field goal gave them a 26-3 lead to seal the victory.
Fort Valley put up 137 yards on the ground and 219 total offensive yards while the Panthers netted 245 yards in the air and a total offense of 169 yards.
Clark Atlanta linebacker Terrance Pryor led the Panthers on defense with a game-high 15 tackles including one for a loss followed by defensive lineman Chris Flowers who recoreded six tackles including two for a loss of 19 yards and two sacks. CAU had a slight advantage in the time of possession with the ball 31 minutes over Fort Valley's 28.
Next, the Panthers will host Concordia College-Selma in a 6 p.m., match-up Saturday, Sept. 22, at Panther Stadium.
