Panthers' Track and Field Competes at Falcon Classic and Multi Hosted by Montevallo

Freshman Jayla Kennedy sets new school record in 100-meter dash

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Clark Atlanta University Lady Panthers Track and Field team has been making waves. After a strong performance at the Falcon Classic in Montevallo, Alabama, the team is gearing up for the Emory Spring Break Classic, set to take place at the Woodruff PE Center on March 21-22, 2025. With events starting on Friday from 3:00 PM to 8:30 PM and resuming Saturday from 9:15 AM to 4:40 PM, CAU fans are encouraged to come out and show their support for this talented group of young women. Despite challenging weather conditions that condensed the Falcon Classic into a single day, the Lady Panthers rose to the occasion and delivered impressive performances across multiple events. Shynique McGee continues to make headlines in the field events, capturing first place in the triple jump with a personal best of 11.96 meters. As she inches closer to the NCAA Division II national qualifying standard of 11.99, her performance highlights her potential to compete at the national level. Teammate Isis Lewis contributed with a commendable 7th place finish in the same event.

On the track, Jayla Kennedy made history by sprinting to a spectacular first-place finish in the 100 meters with a new PR of 11.88 seconds, establishing a new record for the Clark Atlanta Track and Field program. Genesis Washington contributed to the team's success by taking first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.05 seconds, while Shynique McGee placed 7th in the 100-meter hurdles, demonstrating the depth of talent within the squad.
The Lady Panthers also showcased their teamwork with a strong performance in the 4x100 relay, where the squad of M. Young, J. Kennedy, A. Williams, and M. Graham finished 3rd with a time of 48.22 seconds. Additionally, Kennedy and Anniyah Williams made waves in the 200 meters, securing 2nd and 3rd place finishes, respectively, with times of 24.92 and 24.94.

In the 400 meters, Karron Warren and Anniyah Williams both had commendable finishes, placing 3rd and 4th, with times of 57.98 and 58.31. In field events, Jayme Redmond excelled, placing 7th in the hammer throw and 5th in the shot put, while Dae'Janae Hannah celebrated a personal best in the discus with a throw of 37.27 meters, securing 6th place.

Coach Dr. Shivers-Cole challenged the team to step out of their comfort zones, and their willingness to embrace that challenge was evident as athletes like Jayda Brooks and Truth Reed participated in the steeplechase for the first time, tackling the grueling event with enthusiasm and determination. As the Lady Panthers prepare for the Emory Spring Break Classic, they carry with them the momentum of their recent successes. The team is eager to build upon this foundation, with Coach Shivers-Cole expressing confidence in their progress and commending their teamwork and hard work.
