Carmelia Shivers-Cole Makes Her CAU Cross Country head coach debut

MILLEDGVILLE, Ga -- The Clark Atlanta University men's and women's cross-country team traveled to Milledgeville to compete in the Georgia Military College Brickyard Invitational hosted by Georgia Military College on Friday, September 6th.

WOMEN'S 5K RACE
The women's team finished in sixth place out of the ten teams competing while the men's team finished in sixth out of seven teams. Aaliyah Jackson crossed the finish line as Clark Atlanta's top runner in 26th place with a time of 22:31.4.  Following her in 42nd and 47th were Shiloh Brooks (25:39.19) and Karon Warren (28:41.36). Making her cross country debut Malachia Abney followed with (29:24.76) with newcomers Danielle Thompson and Nasjae Baker falling in shortly behind with times of (31:26.06) and (34:25.88).  "During time trials last week none of us were hitting times under 40 minutes" says team captain Karon Warren when asked what some of the successes from the team were this meet, "Coach's goal for us coming into our first meet was to come in under 30 minutes and we were able to accomplish that, which is really really good for us". when followed up with a question of what were some of her personal successes from the first meet of her junior season, she says "I believe that last season I was coming in at 30 minutes for a few meets…I'm not a Cross Country runner, It's not my main events, nor is it a lot of these girls events, but for myself set off the season with a 28 is a personal success, as well as for the other girls to finish across the line is a success in itself "

MENS 8K
The men's team finished in sixth place out of seven teams. Clark Atlanta's top finisher Elijah Hargrove crossed in 31st place with a time of (29:41.49), followed by Tyree Tillis with a time of (32:17.01), while Ethan Dorset chased after with a time of (32:46.08). Cristion Landers and Nicholas Barnett crossed the finish line with close times of (37:39.23) and (39:01.84) as they closed out the men's 8K.

REMARKS FROM HEAD COACH CARMELIA SHIVERS
This was head coach Carmelia Shivers first cross country meet as head coach, when asked what her expectations were going into Friday's meet were, she responded with " This was a lot of young ladies' first time running the 5k competitively, as well the freshman boys first time competing in the 8k as it is a collegiate event not one that they've been exposed to in high school… everyone supported their teammates & motivated one another…everyone showed effort & that's all I asked for"

A lot of firsts this meet for our cross country team. Next Friday, September 5th, the Panthers will be heading down to Oakwood, Georgia as they compete in the University of North Georgia Invite.
