PREVIEW: Clark Atlanta Hosts Central State for Homecoming 2023

Panthers look to get into the win column on homecoming

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Clark Atlanta University football team is looking to emerge victorious as they host the Central State Marauders this weekend during this year's Homecoming game (Oct. 21). Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET on HBCUGO Sports.

MATCHUP PREVIEW 

The Panthers sit at an 0-7 record heading into Saturday's matchup against looking to gain their first win of the season. Central State comes with a 2-5 record after winning their Homecoming game against Savannah State 21-10. Saturday's contest will be the seventh meeting between the two programs dating back to 2014. Miles leads the series 4-2, having won two straight games against Clark Atlanta. 

CLARK ATLANTA 

Clark Atlanta, in week 7, averages 19.343 points per game while allowing opponents an average of 35 ppg. Clark Atlanta continues to win the time of possession battle over opponents 31:44-28:16 and fourth down conversions at 33.33%. Running back Daquon Kincey (Abbeville, Ala.) continues to lead Clark Atlanta in several categories including touchdowns (11), rushing yards (586), and yards per game (83.71). Devion Newsom (Decatur, Ga.) leads the Panthers in receiving yards (403) averaging 67.83 yards per game.

Quarterback Heath Williams Jr. (Clarksville, Tenn.) leads the team in passing with a QB rating of 124.71 and a 49.53% completion percentage. The Clarksville, Tennessee native has a team-high 873 yards and three touchdowns. Daquan Nelson (James Island, SC) plays secondary with a rating 217.60% rating and 100% completion rate (3-3). 

CENTRAL STATE

The Marauders kicked off their season with a win against Division I FCS opponent Mississippi Valley State 24-21 in week one. However, that followed a five-game losing Streat until last week's win over Savannah State. Miles College averages 17.86 points per game this season while holding opponents to 35.47 points per game. CSU averages 226.86 yards per game in the air, 72.7 yards on the ground, and 24:16 average possessions a game. 

LAST TIMEOUT

Clark Atlanta still looking to secure their first win of the 2023 season after a string of close games the last two weeks. The Panthers came up short against Shorter this past weekend but fell short to the Hawks in overtime 27-34 in their 2023 Homecoming game. Fernando Lobo kept the Panthers in the game with his 46-yard field goal, setting a personal best this season, pushing the game into overtime.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
The Panthers are on the road next Saturday, October 28 as they head to Tuskegee, Alabama to take on the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee at 1 p.m. CT.
