The Clark Atlanta University Panthers will dive into Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action when they host Central State University today at 6 p.m. at CAU Panther Stadium.
CAU (0-2) is coming off a close 16-10 loss to Allen last week in South Carolina, while Central State (0-2) is also seeking their first win of the season after losing 38-3 last week to Southwest Baptist University and the week before to Quincy University 38-8.
The two teams come together a year after a game in Wilberforce, Ohio that was swamped by rain and wind and a muddy field. Central State only had 100 yards of offense and four first downs in defeating CAU 7-0 in a game where both teams struggled to move the football.
At Allen, CAU quarterbacks
Charles Stafford and
P.J. Sanford combined to throw for 258 yards, with
Darrell Nichols,
Felix Jones and
Johnathan Sanders each catching five passes. On defense, the Panthers'
Breante Glover led the defense with ten tackles, three for losses, and a sack. The CAU defense also picked off three passes and forced two fumbles.
Central State's offense has struggled so far this season, with only 11 points in two games. Terraris Saffold has been a bright spot, rushing for 107 yards on 23 rushes last week. Quarterbacks Frank Cocio and Derell Williams have split time, combining to throw for 363 yards in their two games.
Panther Notes: The last time Central State visited CAU Panther Stadium was in 2017 when CAU had 644 yards of total offense in defeating CSU 55-14. CAU rushed for 356 yards and five touchdowns that day… The last time Central State defeated CAU in Atlanta was in 2015 when the Marauders won 49-12…. It's the first of two straight home games for the Panthers. Next week, CAU hosts Albany State at 2 p.m.
