Panthers’ Holiday Break Ends With SIAC Road Contest at Spring Hill College

The long holiday break for the Clark Atlanta University Panthers is about to end as they dive back into Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday, Dec. 30 at 4 p.m. (CST) when they visit Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala.

The game can be seen live via web stream at  https://livestream.com/accounts/1734109/events/4366413.

CAU is 11-1 overall, 5-0 in the SIAC East Division in a first-place tie with Claflin and Morehouse, while Spring Hill has had as tough start to the season as they are 2-9 overall and 0-3 in the SIAC.

The Panthers go into the game with a six-game winning streak, and their only loss this season being to Alabama-Montgomery, the team they lost to in last season's NCAA Division II Basketball Tournament. Their last time out, CAU's hot shooting, strong defense, and huge day by the Panthers' bench led them to a 94-67 win over Kentucky State on Dec. 18.

The Panthers have the SIAC's second-best scoring team at 83.2 points per game (Morehouse is first with 87.2) and the conference's fourth-best defense, giving up just under 71 points a game.

Akil Douglas leads the Panthers in scoring and rebounding – and is among the SIAC's top 10 scorers and rebounders – with 15.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Austin Donaldson leads the SIAC in steals and is fourth in assists, while Anthony "A.J." Williams in in the top 10 in steals and is second in the conference in assists to turnover ratio.

Head coach Darrell Walker said he pushed his team to focus on their conditioning during the break.

"But I just told them to think about the offense and defense and what we've been doing all year and try to come back and get back to it again," Walker said. "It's great to be 11—1.  Guys have played hard for me. They bought what we're doing defensively and that's the key."

Spring Hill has struggled, losing their last eight games.  They are led by Brandon Fischer, their only double-digit scorer who averages 13.7 points per game.  Fischer also leads Spring Hill in rebounding with 6.2 per game.

After Saturday's game, the Panthers return home to host Lane College on Jan. 4 at 8 p.m. and then Lemoyne-Owen College at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6.
