ATLANTA, Ga. - With the 2015-2016 regular season concluded, the basketball teams from Clark Atlanta will now focus on competing for the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship to be held in Birmingham, Ala. Feb. 29- Mar. 5. The tournament will once again take place from within the Birmingham CrossPlex at Bill Harris Arena.
The women's basketball team will be pursuing a sixth SIAC title with the most recent win coming in 2013 - only
Nekia Sockwell remains from that championship team.
Mykala Jones leads the Panthers offense and was most recently named All-SIAC First Team. Jones tops the conference with 20.6 PPG and has been atop the scoring list in 22-of-26 games.
Siera Bubb posted seven double-doubles on the season with two games over 20+ rebounds - versus Lane (20 rebounds - Jan. 2) and LeMoyne-Owen (2 rebounds - Jan. 4).
The women enter the tournament as the No. 6 (6-20; 4-12 SIAC) seed from the East and will face No. 3 West Central State on Tues., Mar. 1 at 2:30 p.m. (CT). The two teams played just once this season - Jan. 7 from Wilberforce, Ohio - with Clark Atlanta picking up the 80-58 victory. Three players scored in double figures in the game led - Jones (21),
Sydni Davis (18), and Sockwell (14) - while Bubb registered 12 rebounds.
The winner of the game will advance to face Albany State (No. 2 East) Thurs., Mar. 3 at 5:30 p.m. (CT).
A late-season three-game winning streak propelled the CAU men's basketball team (9-19; 7-11 SIAC) to the No. 4 East seed and will open the tournament versus West No. 5 Tuskegee on Mon., Feb. 29 at 9:15 p.m. (CT). CAU was defeated at Tuskegee on Feb. 8 despite receiving a double-double from
David Basil (13 points, 13 rebounds).
The Panthers have claimed the SIAC men's championship four times, most recently in 2011.
Tim Sanders - a finalist for SIAC Player of the Year - concluded the regular-season No. 6 nationally in steals per game (2.48) and No. 16 overall with 57 steals. Sanders leads the Panthers with 14.0 points per game, followed by
Damien Enoch (12.5) and
Derek Harper (10.9). Enoch averages 6.9 rebounds per game and has posted seven double-doubles on the season. Harper led the team in scoring eight times - including four consecutive after returning from the winter break.
The winner of the Clark Atlanta versus Tuskegee game will face Stillman, the No. 1 seed from the West, Wed., Mar. 2 at 7:45 p.m. (CT).
