Softball Sweeps Paine, Advances to Conference Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Augusta, Ga. --- It took three days and 145 miles to get the three-game set in between the Clark Atlanta University Lady Panthers and the Paine College Lions, but the two teams were finally able to hit the field on Tuesday in Augusta, Georgia, with the Lady Panthers knowing that they must win all three games in order to qualify for the end of the season Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) tournament. Three wins they needed, and three games they got as they swept the Lions, 11-0, 15-7, and 18-1.

The team entered Tuesday's contests two games behind Benedict College for the fourth and final spot out of the SIAC East Division, but did not hold the tie-breaker thus ensuring that they must get the sweep.

The Lady Panthers (11-27, 7-11 SIAC) will now switch their focus to their first round game at the tournament, which will see them take on top-seeded Stillman College (21-15, 16-3 SIAC) at 2 pm on Thursday, in Columbia, South Carolina. In their only previous meeting this season, Stillman came out on top with a 7-2 victory.

The tournament, which will be played at Polo Road Park (730 Polo Road, Columbia, S.C., 29223), will be contested under double-elimination rules, meaning that you may lose one game and still will the tournament. The date and time of the Lady Panthers second game will depend solely on the outcome of their first matchup. Should the team advance all the way to the finals, that game will be played on Saturday at 1 pm.
