Box Score Birmingham, Ala. --- The Clark Atlanta University Panthers' season came to a screeching halt on Wednesday afternoon, losing in the second round of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Men's Basketball Tournament to the Paine College Lions, 97-71. Kenneth Green scored 16 for CAU in what was his last collegiate game. Denzel Dillingham, one of three players in double-figures for Paine, finished with 20 points.
The Panthers (7-21) were never able to find their groove in the game, shooting just 24-of-71 (33.8%) for the game from the floor. Paine on the other hand seemed as if they couldn't miss, going 33-of-59 (55.9%).
For the first four minutes of the game, it looked as if there would be a close up-and-down battle for the entire 60 minutes, with PC leading 9-7. Then the cold streak would hit for CAU as the Lions went on a 13-0 run to push their lead to 15. Paine would lead by as much as 18 in the first half, and took a 13-point lead into the break. The second half was much of the same for both teams, as the Lions continued to push their lead higher and higher.
Season RecapThe Panthers finished the season with a record of 7-21, including a 5-14 SIAC conference record. The season started out on the slow side for the team, but they looked as if they had the ball rolling towards the end of the season, heading into the conference tournament.
CAU would win just one of their first nine games on the season, but would then roll off two straight SIAC wins against Miles College, and the West Division leading Stillman College. Then, much like in their game today, they would hit a cold streak, losing nine straight including a thriller against Paine College, which ended in PC's favor at 125-120 in overtime. The team then headed into the conference tournament without any real expectations from the outside, but they shocked a number of people when they knocked off LeMoyne-Owen in the first round of the tournament.
The Panthers are losing three players this season, as seniors Johnell Young, Kenneth Green and Earl Lawrence will all be moving on as they finish up their eligibility. Clark Atlanta will look to add some new players next season to go with their returners, to build on what they were able to accomplish this season.
