Panthers Take One of Three From Morehouse

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Atlanta, Ga. --- For the second time this season, the Clark Atlanta University Panthers squared off with their Atlanta University Center (AUC) and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) rivals, the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers, at Perkerson Park in Atlanta, Georgia. After the first two games of the series, which Morehouse won 14-6 and 9-7 respectively, it looked as if the Panthers would not get the win they so desperately wanted against their heated rivals, but Sunday proved to be just what they were looking for as they knocked off the Maroon Tigers 5-3.

Game one was a close affair through the first three innings as the Panthers trailed 2-1, with the offense coming from Darian Taylor thanks to four-straight walks given up by the Tigers pitcher. However, a seven-run bottom of the fourth, combined with a five run bottom of the sixth inning broke the game wide open for the home side, as they would eventually close out the victory. Clark Atlanta wouldn't go down without a fight scoring five runs in the top half of the seventh inning, but the margin would be too big to overcome.

Jezreel Moore pitched five innings for CAU, giving up seven hits and eight earned runs, while striking out five. Deance' Wyatt, Joseph Holmes II and Kendall Morrison all had two RBIs in the loss.

The rivals would kick off the second half of the doubleheader on Saturday not long after the dust had settled on the first battle, with this one coming down to the final at-bat. Morehosue would jump out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but the score would stay just like that until the top of the fourth, when CAU would match their counterparts' offensive output, thanks in part to a three-RBI triple from Malcolm Seabrooks, as he was thrown out going for the inside-the-park homerun.

The Maroon Tigers would answer right back with two runs in the bottom of the innings, but would give one of those runs back to CAU in the next inning on a Moore single that brought home Marcus McDaniel. Three more runs from the home squad would push their lead to 9-5 going into the seventh and final frame.

The Panthers would get two runners in scoring position early on in the inning, and both would quickly be brought home by a Holmes single, cutting the lead to just two and forcing the Tigers to bring in a new pitcher. Holmes would eventually move all the way over to third base with the game-tying run at the plate on three occasions, but CAU was unable to get any offense off of the reliever as they fell just short.

Sunday brought a whole new energy to the Panthers, as was evident in their play. Sophomore Aaron Chambers would get just his second start of the season on the mound for Clark Atlanta, and he would take advantage of the opportunity.

The nine-inning affair saw a scoreless game as it entered the fourth inning, but CAU would change that with a two-run effort on a Johnny Surry two-RBI single. The Panthers would add two more runs over the next two innings, pushing their lead to 4-0 with Morehouse coming to bat in the sixth inning. Thanks to a couple errors, the Tigers would score two unearned runs in the inning, and would add another unearned run in the next inning.

Clark Atlanta would add an insurance run in the eighth inning on a Seabrooks RBI-single, but the pitching combination of Chambers and Taylor would shut down the Tigers, as the Panther earned the victory.

Chambers would go 6.2 innings for the Panthers, giving up no earned runs on just six hits, with six strikeouts. Taylor would shut the door in his 2.1 innings to close the game, giving up two hits against the nine batters he faced.

The Panthers will look to extend their win into a winning streak as they travel to Albany, Georgia, this coming weekend to face off against Albany State University. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 pm, and will finish up the series on Sunday with a single nine-inning game to begin at 1 pm.
