Box Score 3 Columbia, S.C. --- The Clark Atlanta University Lady Panthers might have only come away with one victory in their rare triple-header against Benedict College on Saturday, but what they did come away with was confidence going into the final few weeks of the season. The Lady Panthers won the first game 4-1, lost the second 9-8 on a walk-off single, and lost the third game, which was originally scheduled for Sunday but was moved to Saturday night due to rain, 12-11 on another walk-off single.
Game one showed just how well the Lady Panthers are capable of playing as a solid pitching performance by freshman Veranae Woods shut down the Lady Tigers of Benedict College. Woods pitched a complete game, giving up just three hits and one run while striking out two. Woods also helped get the first run on the board for CAU, reaching on an error which allowed the first run to cross the plate in the top of the fifth inning. One inning later, junior Asia Nelson would blast a two-run homerun to increase the lead, and they would plate one more run in the top of the seventh to seal the victory in the opening game.
The second meeting of the day would be an offensive affair, with the Tigers jumping out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning. However, the Lady Panthers would quickly answer in the top of the second thanks to a RBI sacrifice groundout from Sharnitra Woods. The two teams would continue to trade runs through the third inning, before both were heeld scoreless in the fourth. Benedict came to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and were able to get three runs across the plate, adding another two in the sixth to push their lead to 8-3, but Clark Atlanta would not quit. Coming up to bat in the top of the seventh inning, they needed five runs to continue the game, and that's precisely what they got, thanks to an RBI from both Sharnitra Woods and Shatoya Miller, and two RBIs from Viola Choice. However, Benedict would ultimately get the victory thanks to an RBI single in the bottom half of the seventh inning.
The third and final game of the series kicked off not long after the heartbreaking defeat, but the game would look very similar to the second contest, much to the dismay of the Lady Panthers. Jessica Vason got CAU off to a quick start with a two-run home run in the first inning. Benedict would soon answer with four runs of their own in their half of the inning. The teams would remain at the 4-2 difference until the fourth inning, when Clark Atlanta was able to put eight runs across the board, thanks in part to a two-run double by Tamera Green, and a three-run home run from S. Woods. Benedict would slowly chip away at the Lady Panthers lead, as they headed into the seventh inning with a 11-10 CAU lead. Errors would rear their ugly head and allow Benedict to score two unearned runs in the bottom half of the frame, earning the walk-off victory.
S. Woods went 5-of-9 with six RBIs for the Lady Panthers, with sister V. Woods pitched 13.2 innings on the day, earning one victory and taking the loss in the final game.
The softball team will hit the field again on Friday, March 27th, as they play host to Talladega College in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm.
