Panthers Edged Out in Pitchers Duel

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Atlanta, Ga. --- When the Clark Atlanta University Panthers baseball team showed up to Bill Evans Field on Saturday afternoon, they were planning on playing a single game against Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) foe Paine College, but how quickly those plans would change. Due to the threat on inclement weather on Sunday, the doubleheader was moved to Saturday evening, and judging by the way things went in the first game, the Panthers were unfazed by the late changes. However, despite the best effort of the season, the Panthers were unable to beat the Lions, falling 2-1 and 11-2.

The first game was a classic pitchers duel between Jezreel Moore of the Panthers and Juan Berger of the Lions. Despite allowing the first batter of the game to score, Jezreel Moore pitched seven strong innings for CAU, giving up just seven hits along the way, while striking out three. On three different occasions he retired the first three batters of the inning, including in the final two innings. Despite this outstanding pitching performance, Clark Atlanta was unable to generate enough offense to overcome the pitching performance from Berger, who pitched seven innings, allowing just two hits and striking out seven, although they had their chance at the end. Malcolm Seabrooks singled in the bottom of the seventh inning, and would be replaced on the base paths by Timothy Rowe. Two batters later Johnny Surry would reach base after he was hit by a pitch, putting the winning run on base for the Panthers. However, an untimely base running mishap would see the lead runner tagged out while trying to score, ending the game with CAU just a few feet from the tying run.

The second game started out just as well for Clark Atlanta, but fatigue would start to set in, right about the same time as the rain began to fall. Once again, the first batter of the game was able to score for Paine, but starter Darian Taylor would shut the rest of the hitters down in the opening frame. Clark Atlanta would score two in the bottom of the second, thanks to runs from Marcus McDaniel and Arias Smith. Going into the fourth inning, the Panthers still led the Lions 2-1 when the rain started to fall and the game would turn upside down. The visitors would plate three runs in the top of the fourth, and five in the fifth to bust the game wide open.

The Panthers will return to action tomorrow, barring any inclement weather, at 1 pm to play the third and final game of the series with Paine.
