Box Score 2 Atlanta, Ga. --- The Clark Atlanta Lady Panthers softball team returned to their home field on Wednesday afternoon looking to bounce back from a tough Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) weekend, as they hosted the Concordia College Hornets. It turns out home cooking is just what the Lady Panthers needed needed as they won both games of the doubleheader, 16-1 and 14-6.
Game one saw Clark Atlanta jump out to a commanding 8-0 lead after just two innings, thanks in part to three RBIs from Jessica Vason, including a two-run home run in the second, and a two-run single from Ki'esha Young in the first. Going into the top of the fifth and final inning, pitcher Veranae Woods had only allowed one hit and walked one batter, before the Hornets were finally able to get a couple of base runners and an eventual run. Woods would get the victory in the contest. CAU would score in every inning in which they batted in the run-shortened game, getting four in the first, four in the second, six in the third and two in the fourth. Zhandria Usher would add a two-run homerun in addition to Vason's, and Woods would help her own cause as she went 3-for-3 with three RBIs.
The second contest would not be quite as easy for the Lady Panthers, at least for the first couple of innings. The two teams would trade runs over the first two innings, but the third frame saw the visitors from Selma, Alabama, jump out to a 4-3 lead, before Clark Atlanta woke up. The bottom of the fourth inning saw the home team plate eight runs, thanks to some timely steals on the base paths. CAU swiped an astounding nine bases in the inning, including five steals of home plate. This aggressiveness on the bases caused all sorts of problems for Concordia, as they were caught throwing the ball to the wrong base on multiple occasions. The victory was a complete team effort as everyone who came to the plate in the game got on base. Woods once again got the victory for CAU, as she came on in relief for starter KaShaira Givens in the third inning.
The Lady Panthers will return to action this weekend as they travel to Columbia, S.C. to take on SIAC rivals Benedict College. Friday's game is set for 5 pm, with the doubleheader on Sunday scheduled to start at 2 pm.
