Late Game Heroics Give Paine A Sweep of the Panthers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Augusta, Ga. --- The Clark Atlanta University men's and women's basketball teams traveled down the road to give Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) foes Paine College a visit on Thursday night, looking for revenge after dropping both games to the Lions earlier this season at home. However, due to some late game heroics by PC, CAU didn't end up with the result they were looking for.

Women's Game

The Lady Panthers (8-13, 4-10 SIAC) came in looking to end their season long five-game skid, but a layup by Lasharon Salahuddin as the buzzer sounded would give the home team a 76-74 victory. This marks the second time in four games that the team has lost on a buzzer-beating shot. Mykala Jones scored 21 points for the Lady Panthers and teammate Siera Bubb added 16 points and 19 rebounds in the loss. Brianna Sims and Janisha Wilkerson both recorded 14 points for PC.

Bench scoring proved to be the ultimate deciding factor as Paine held a 53-18 advantage over Clark Atlanta. Despite this, CAU held a six-point lead with just 2:13 remaining in the contest, but the Lady Panthers were unable to buy a basket the rest of the game as the Lady Lions went on a 7-0 run en route to the victory.

Men's Game

The Panthers (5-17, 4-11 SIAC) took the court against the #4 regionally ranked Lions looking for revenge after dropping their previous contest in overtime, 125-120. Although the score was much lower this time around, the result was the same for the Panthers as they fell 80-77. Najee Whitehead has a game-high 19 points for CAU, as Alfonso Davis dropped 15 for PC.

Clark Atlanta jumped out to a 38-33 lead at the end of the first half of play, and looked to have things in control. Paine would start the second half on a 6-0 run to get themselves back into the contest on their way to eventually opening up a seven-point lead with 6:30 remaining. From there on out, the game would be a back-and-forth battle going down to the final seconds. Unfortunately for the Panthers, they were unable to score over the final 1:09 and watched as the Lions hit two free-throws with just three seconds remaining to give them the victory.

Both teams will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Columbia, South Carolina, to take on Benedict College in a rematch with their SIAC opponents. Benedict won both games of the doubleheader earlier this season. Tip-off for the women's game is 1 PM, with the men following immediately after.
