Box Score Wilberforce, Ohio---In the first meeting between the two schools, the Clark Atlanta University Panthers dropped a 28-18 decision on the road to Central State University to open the 2014 football season Saturday.
Both teams traded scoring drives in the first quarter with Central State (1-0, 0-0) striking first on its opening possession with a 67-yard touchdown pass to Leon Chambers followed by a two-yard run by quarterback Terrence Wafford. After a 67-yard scoring drive, the Panthers (0-1, 0-0) settled for a field goal before sophomore quarterback Trenton Earl connected with Travious Blair for a 59-yard touchdown pass to close Central State's first quarter lead to five points, 14-9.
After another CAU field goal in the second quarter, the Panthers cut the defecit to five points though a late turnover gave Central State the ball at its own 46-yard line with 14 seconds remaining before the half. The Mauders found the back of the endzone on their second possession of the drive to extend their lead to 21-12.
A defensive battled ensued in the second half and both teams were held scoreless in the third quarter and scored a touchdown each in the fourth quarter.
The Panthers garnered 345 total yards on offense including 262 on the ground led by SIAC preseason All-Conference running back Montavious Taylor who led the team with 119 rushing yards. Wafford led the Mauders' offensive attack with 221 passing yards of the team's 422 total yards.
Defensively, Jacob Mitchell led the Panthers with eight tackles including five solo tackles followed by Bre'nard Williams and LaRelle Muldrow who finished with six each. Clark Atlanta will host Lane College in its HOME opener Saturday, Sept.13th, at 2 p.m., in Panther Stadium.
