Box Score Columbia, S.C.-The Clark Atlanta University Lady Panthers stumble on the road for their second consecutive conference loss after falling 92-65 to Benedict College in women's basketball action Monday.
Though they held the Lady Tigers to 37 percent shooting from the field and 12 percent from behind the arc in the first period, the Lady Panthers (13-5, SIAC 6-2) trailed 41-33 at the half. Clark Atlanta knocked down 50 percent of its shots from the floor on 15-of-30 shooting in the period, but struggled immensely from the field in the second period while hitting only seven baskets on 25 attempts. CAU could not bounce back after the half as the Lady Tigers extended their lead for the win.
Benedict (13-6, SIAC 7-2) had an 11-point advantage from the free throw line where it earned 27 points compared to CAU's 18. Four Lady Panthers finished in double-digits led by forward Jomanda Smalls with 15 followed by Erika Sumpter 13, and Denissea Law and Iyana Spatcher with 10 each. Benedict's Kadeeja Vaughn topped all scorers with 21 points off the bench while Santera Grooms added 19 points and 11 rebounds. The Lady Tigers dominated the glass by outrebounding Clark Atlanta 59 to 24.
The loss dropped CAU to fourth place in the SIAC East Division, though only one win separates the top four teams. Next, the Lady Panthers will host Albany State at Epps Gymnasium Thursday, Jan. 30th @ 6 p.m.
