Box Score Atlanta, Ga.---In thrilling fashion, the Clark Atlanta University men's basketball team edges Shorter University 91-90 to claim its first win this season under Interim Head Coach Tony Lamar at Epps Gymnasium Friday.
A lay-up by Shorter's Travis Jones gave the Hawks a 90-87 lead with 49 seconds remaining before Jordan Husley's dunk placed the Panthers within one-point on their next possession. CAU trailed much of the game and played under control down the stretch. After a CAU foul with 25 seconds remaining, Shorter missed both free throw attempts and a huge rebound by senior Dwayne Bingham gave Clark Atlanta a chance to take the lead. With eight seconds remaining Christian Houston's aggressive play put him at the line for two free throw attempts and he nailed both as the Panthers claimed a one-point advantage.
With one more opportunity at redemption from the free throw line, the Hawks could not capitalize after missing both free attempts with three seconds remaining that sealed the win for the Panthers.
"Our guys kept their composure throughout the entire game and persevered through some difficult stretches in the game," said Lamarr.
The Hawks led CAU 54-47 at the half and by as many as 13 points in the first while the Panthers outscored Shorter 44 to 36 in the second period. From the line, Clark Atlanta shot 63 percent compared to Shorters 48 percent and had a slight disadvantage on the boards 52-48. Five players in double figures led the way for the Panthers headed by Jerrel Joye who finished with a game-high 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting, followed by Husley (22), Dwayne Bingham (13), Houston (10) and Kenneth Green with 14 off the bench. For the Hawks, Dedric Ware poured in 22 points while Donald Ware added the game's only double-double with 11 poiints and 11 rebounds.
Next, the Panthers (1-1) will host Georgia Southwestern University Saturday, Nov. 23, at 6:30 p.m., in Epps Gymnasium.
