Clark Atlanta Smothers Wesleyan in Regular Season Finale

Atlanta, Ga.---In the final game of the regular season, Clark Atlanta senior Ashley Brooks threw a shut-out while freshman Nicolette Anderson rocked at the plate as the Lady Panthers downed Wesleyan College 12-0 and 13-8 at Panther field Sunday.

It was all CAU in game one as the Lady Panthers jumped out early with 10 runs in the bottom of the first behind the bat of Brooks who went 2-for-2, on a double and a single that drove in two runs and Anderson who added two RBIs and two doubles. Clark Atlanta added two more insurance runs in the third that proved too much for Wesleyan to overcome. It was the first shut-out victory for Brooks who recorded five strikeouts, one hit and one walk in the win.

Picking up her second win on the mound, Anderson helped herself at the plate with a double, a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored while batting .472. Sophomore Elizabeth Handy led the way in the fifth inning with a three-run rocket over the left field fence that gave Clark Atlanta a 10-4 advantage. Handy finished the game perfect at the plate on four attempts with a double, two singles and five RBIs.

“This was a great win for us as we head into the conference tournament this week,” said CAU Head Coach Lawanda Pearson.

The Lady Panthers, who finished the regular season 20-22 overall and 8-18 in conference play, will open the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) tournament with the No. 5 seed in the East and will take on No. 4 in the West Tuskegee in the first round Thursday, April 19, at 12 p.m. The tournament will be held April 19-22, at the Gerald Matthews Softball Complex 1935 McDonough Road Hampton, Georgia, and the admission is FREE.
