Lady Panthers Succumb to a Rash of Free Throws

Box Score

Memphis, Tenn.--- While making 22-of-31 free throw attempts in the second period, LeMoyne-Owen pulled away from the Lady Panthers of Clark Atlanta University for a 74-66 conference victory at home Saturday.

It was a lopsided game from the charity stripe as the Lady Magicians capitalized on 31 opportunities compared to Clark Atlanta’s two free throw attempts in the second period. With four three-point field goals in a five-minute span, the Lady Magicians diminished CAU's seven point lead and knotted the game at 52 early in the second period.  LeMoyne-Owen captured its first lead at the 10:36 mark and Tangela Albright’s lay-up with 7:52 remaining gave the Magicians their largest lead of the game. The Lady Panthers pulled within two points but that was as close as they would come to the lead down the stretch.

Sophomore center Erica Sumpter came up big in the paint for the Lady Panthers with 16 first half points as she carried them to an eight-point advantage at the half. Sumpter led the Lady Panthers with a season-high 22 points on
10-of-11 shooting from the field and 2-for-2 at the free throw line. Conisha Hicks added 12 points, a team-high nine rebounds and five assists followed by Shantress Thrash with 10 points and four assists for the Lady Panthers.

LeMoyne-Owen’s Shonice Sprouse, who was 10-of-14 at the line, led all scorers with 24 points and six assists while Jasmine Massey chipped in 13 points and Ashley Mason finished with 12.

Next, the Lady Panthers will face Miles College in the second of two road games Monday, Jan. 9, at 5:30 p.m.
