Senior Logan Shoffner
Box Score

Memphis, Tenn.— Clark Atlanta University senior Logan Shoffner's eight points in extra periods lifted the Panthers over LeMoyne-Owen 81-78 in double overtime on the road Saturday.

After the period’s fifth lead change at the 3:37 mark in the opening period, LeMoyne Owen’s Chris Brown hit two of the team’s three three-pointers on a nine to two run in the final minutes to take 27-20 lead at the half. Both teams struggled from the field in the period as Clark Atlanta went 7-for-32 while LeMoyne-Owen hit 10-of-31.

Brandon Watson’s three-point field goal early in the second half extended the Magicians lead to nine points before CAU’s Jermille Fluker hit five of his eight points during an 11 to 4 run that gave the Panthers back the lead since late in the first period.

Clark Atlanta held its largest lead of the game at 12 points on a three-pointer by Willis Brownlee with 3:29 remaining in the game, but those would be their only points in the final minutes. LeMoyne-Owen took advantage of CAU's missed opportunities and erased the deficit to pull within one point on a three-point play by Brandon Hopson with 16 seconds on the clock. With a 57-56 lead and seven seconds remaining in regulation, a CAU foul puts Chris Brown on the line who hit one-of-two from the charity stripe for the Magicians to tie the game. One last effort from the Panthers came up short on a three-point attempt.

In the first overtime period, the game went back and forth with neither team leading by more than three points. Shoffner, the game’s leading scorer, hit a layup with five seconds remaining for six of his 23 points to send the game into the second overtime period.

It was all free throws in the second period as the Panthers hit 10-of-12 free throws and pulled away from LeMoyne-Owen.

Three other Panthers scored in double digits in addition to Shoffner including Brownlee with 14 points, Chano Rashiduddin who poured in 13 points and 11 rebounds and Fluker recorded 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists. As a team, the Panthers shot 86 percent from the charity stripe in the overtime periods.

Calvin Stoudemire scored a team-high 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Magicians followed by Teshawn Bryon’s 16 points, Hopson with 14, Shaad O’Garro 11 and Brown 10.

Next, the Panthers will continue their two-game road swing at Miles College Monday, Jan. 9, at 7:30 p.m.
