Benedict Cruises Past Clark Atlanta

Box Score Atlanta, Ga.- Benedict College topped the Lady Panthers of Clark Atlanta University 70-56 in conference action Monday at Epps Gymnasium.

It was all Benedict early and often as the Lady Tigers poured in 41 first half points while shooting 67 percent (6-of-9) from behind the arc. Santera Grooms, who scored 10 points in the period, was perfect on three attempts from the three-point line followed by Monique Weathers who went 2-for2 from that distance.  The Lady Tigers went on a 12-3 run and claimed a 21 point lead late in the period. Shantress Thrash’s back-to-back three-pointers helped the Lady Panthers close the gap on an 8-0 run of their own heading into the half down 41-28.

Although the Lady Panthers picked up their defensive effort in the second period, they continued to struggle offensively shooting only 37 percent from the field and 14 percent from the three-point line.  A better second-half effort by the Lady Panthers diminished Benedict’s advantage to eight points at the 13:25 mark, but that was as close as they would get within the lead.

Bridget Williams led the Lady Tigers with seven of her game-high 20 points in the second period and Grooms added 15. Clark Atlanta’s Ericka Sumpter scored a team-high 10 points while La’Quisha Lewis chipped in nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The lady Panthers will face LeMoyne-Owen and Miles College on the road Jan.7, and Jan. 9, respectively. Both games tip-off at 5:30 p.m.,(central time).
