Twin Towers Lead Lady Panthers to Victory

No. 43 Center Erika Sumpter
Box Score Orangeburg, S.C.- With two players over six feet tall in the starting line-up, Head Coach Vanessa Moore’s strategy to play “Big” inside paid off for Clark Atlanta University Tuesday as La’Quisha Lewis and Erika Sumpter, who both recorded double-doubles, led the Lady Panthers to a triumphant win over  Claflin University, 75-72, on the road at Tullis Arena.

In a game that featured 16 ties and 12 lead changes, CAU took a slight advantage, 38-37, into the half behind Lewis and Denissea Law’s 10-point first period performance. Midway in the second half though, Claflin stretched out to a six point lead as Clark Atlanta stared at its largest deficit. Then, CAU turned it up a notch on both ends of the floor down the stretch with Sumpter pouring in 12 of her game-high 19 points during this period. Within the final minute, Conisha Hicks’ jumper gave the Lady Panthers a 72-70 edge as they held on for the win. Clark Atlanta held Claflin to three field goals in the final four minutes of the contest.

Sumpter and Lewis were huge for the Lady Panthers as they shot a combined 13-of-17 from the field while pulling down 15 and 14 boards, respectively, as they gave CAU a 51 to 38 advantage in that category.  Lewis added 16 points while Hicks finished with 12 and Law chipped in 14 off the bench.

The last game in the four-game road swing for the Lady Panthers (5-10, SIAC 5-7) culminates at Fort Valley State University Saturday, Jan. 28, in a 6 p.m., match-up against the Lady Wildcats who ranks third in the conference.
