Lady Panthers Could Not Hold on Against Stillman

Box Score TUSCALOOSA, Alabama (January 21, 2012) – Clark Atlanta University could not hold off the feisty Lady Tigers of Stillman College as they edged the Lady Panthers 64-62 Saturday night at Birthright Gymnasium.

It was all CAU (4-10, 4-7 SIAC) in the opening period behind Conisha Hicks' 19 first half points as the Lady Panthers held their largest lead of the game at 11 points to take a 30-23 advantage into the break. As a team, Clark Atlanta was impressive from the charity stripe in the period shooting 93 percent led by Shavon Caldwell who was perfect on six attempts.

With 15 minutes remaining in the second period, Stillman orchestrated a 10-3 and knotted the game at 33. There would be five more ties until Phyllice Eubanks made good on two free-throw attempts as the Lady Tigers claimed the lead and led by as many as six points down the stretch.

Facing a five-point deficit with 19 seconds remaining, CAU freshman Denissea Law reeled off five points including a clutch three-pointer after a Stillman free-throw with five seconds left that pulled the Lady Panthers within one point, 63-62. A quick CAU foul on the next possession sent Eubanks, the team’s leading scorer with 18 points, to the line where she hit 1-of-2 and sealed it for the Lady Tigers.

For Clark Atlanta, Hicks poured in a game-high 27 points along with four steals while Law chipped in 12 points and two rebounds and Caldwell finished with ten points and two rebounds.

Eubanks also added ten rebounds and six assists for Stillman (9-4, 7-2 SIAC) while Jamila McKinnis tallied 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

The Lady Panthers will continue their four-game road swing at Fort Valley State Saturday, Jan. 28, for a 6 p.m., match-up.
