Lady Panthers Secure Road Win Over Benedict to Close Out Regular Season

Garners scores game-high 16 points

COLUMBIA, S.C.-- The Clark Atlanta women's basketball team closed out the 2023-24 season with a convincing 73-59 victory over SIAC eastern division foe Benedict College on Monday evening. With the win, CAU improves to 14-11 overall and an 11-8 mark in conference play. 

Freshman Atreonia Garner paced Monday's contest with a game-high 16 points, five steals, and two rebounds to power the Lady Panthers to the win. 

Denise Stine scored that game's first points, igniting an 11-0 run for Clark Atlanta just four minutes into the first frame. Kiara Cole-Messiah closed out the quarter with a layup to give CAU a 25-12 advantage headed into the second. The Lady Panthers shot an efficient 8-16 (50%) from the field in the second quarter to outscore the Tigers 20-11 and head into halftime with a 45-23 lead.

Clark Atlanta remained dominant in the second half as a pair of free throws from Shawn Tate put the Panthers ahead 62-38 with 25 seconds left in the third quarter. The Lady Panthers held on to win 73-59 over Benedict College. 

CAU outscored Benedict in the paint 36-26, scored more points off turnovers (23-13), and won the fastbreak scoring battle 28-11.

The 2023-24 SIAC Women's Basketball tournament starts on Saturday, March 3 at Tiger Arena in Savannah, Georgia.
