Panthers Drop Season Finale to Benedict on Last Second Three

Men's basketball finishes the season 22-5 overall

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The Clark Atlanta men's basketball team (22-5, 16-5 SIAC) fell to Benedict College 93-91 on a made-three with six seconds left in regulation on Monday evening. Despite the loss, five Panthers scored in double figures with Andrew Stewart leading the way with a team-high 24 points.

Chris Martin scored 18, Xavier Griffith chipped in 15 points, and Kharye Cayne had 12 while Jalen Williams registered 10 points. Cayne also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Panthers shot 46% from the field, 32% from three-point range, and 73.5% from the foul line.

Both teams battle to a stalemate in the first half as both teams scored an identical 44 points to head into the intermission tied at 44-all. The second half picked up where the first left off as both teams traded blows evenly until Kharye Cayne sank a jumper to pull away with an 11-point lead (76-67) at the 7:52 mark.

Benedict put together a 22-9 run in the remaining eight minutes to take a 90-85 lead 56 seconds left to play. Undeterred, Cayne threw down a furious dunk to cut the margin down to three. In another heroic feat, Andrew Stewart scored on a four-point play to put the Panthers back in front 91-90 with 12 seconds left in the second half.

Clark Atlanta's lead dissipated just six seconds later as Benedict's Malachi McCoy connected on a fastbreak three-pointer to give the Tigers the win.
