Panthers Rout Allen on the Way to SIAC Eastern Division Title

Men's Basketball continues to roll in conference play

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The Clark Atlanta men's basketball team (22-4, 16-4 SIAC) picked up a huge 72-55 road win over the Allen University Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Panthers secure their first SIAC Eastern Division Championship since 2010. Newcomer Xavier Griffith led all scorers with a game-high 22 points to pace the Panthers in the rout. 

Andrew Stewart added 18 points while Kharye Cayne pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and four blocks. Cayne is currently ranked 2nd in Division II with 92 blocks on the season. 

Andrew Stewart scored seven of CAU's first nine points as the Panthers jumped out to a 9-3 lead just six minutes into the contest. The Yellow Jackets responded by storming back to take an 11-10 lead with 12 minutes left until halftime. Allen's lead grew to eight points (30-22) at the 1:47 mark in the first half. Jalen Williams closed out the first half with a made layup to cut the margin down to two (30-28) headed into the intermission.

Stewart finished with 13 first half points for the Panthers. 

Xavier Griffith powered the Panthers to a 39-36 lead after scoring seven points in the first six minutes of the second frame. Griffith went on the score 20 second-half points to propel Clark Atlanta to a 17-point victory over Allen University. The Athens, Ala. native went a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown, 7-for-7 from the charity stripe, and 66% percent from the field in the win. 

Clark Atlanta won the rebounding battle 37-34 while also outscoring the Yellow Jackets in the paint 28-16. 

UP NEXT

The Panthers look to close out the regular season on Monday, February 26 at Benedict College. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. inside HRC Arena.
