Joelle Mafo Pick Up First Win At CAU

DUE WEST, S.C. (SEPTEMBER 2, 2023) – Clark Atlanta womens volleyball split the final two matches of the Erskine College Invitational on Saturday. The Lady Panthers dropped the first match of the day to the Tusculum Pioneers (TU) 3-0 and then responded with a 3-2 win over Erskine College (EC) for their first win of the season.

GAME 1

Day two of the Erskine Invitational started with a matchup between Clark Atlanta and Tusculum. The Lady Pioneers escaped with a win over the Lady Panthers behind a 10–kill performance from Emiah Burrowes.

Despite the loss, CAU didn't fall easily. Junior Allana Drayton-Campbell (Duncanville, Texas) logged 10 assists, which led the team, followed by six assists from sophomore Sanaa Simmons (Tallahassee, Fla.). Freshman Nakayla James scooped a team-high 13 digs to get her first double-digit performance of the season.

The Lady Panthers were led in kills by junior Halle Mitchell (Denton, Texas) with five followed by three apiece from fellow junior Shynique McGee (Atlanta, Ga.) and sophomore Madison Spells (Dickinson, Texas).

GAME 2

The Lady Panthers registered a remarkable six players with a double-digit stat category. Halle Mitchell was one of three CAU players with double-figure kills as she logged a team-high 15 on the way to their first win. Shynique McGee almost logged a double-double performance after collecting 12 kills and eight digs followed by 11 kills from Madison Spells.

Remarkably, Allanah Drayton Campbell set a season-high 23 assists to help push the Lady Panthers to the win.

Clark Atlanta found themselves down 7-5 early in set one until they used a 5-0 scoring run to retake the lead which they held for the rest of the set to take a 1-0 lead. The Flying Fleet was able to win sets two and three to put the Lady Panthers in a dangerous 2-1 hole.

Three attack errors by Erskine and three kills from Clark Atlanta gave the Lady Panthers an early 6-1 advantage in set four. Erskine was able to climb back into it as CAU led 10-8 but CAU pulled away once again at 13-8. Clark Atlanta was able to hold on to win set four 25-21 to even the match score at two apiece.

Erskine started off strong in set five after taking an 8-3 lead in the final set. Undeterred, the Lady Panthers stormed back by using a 5-0 run to even the score at eight apiece. Clark Atlanta took their first lead of the set after back-to-back kills from Miara Bolden (Homewood, Ill.) and Madison Spells to give CAU a 10-9 advantage. The Lady Panthers continued to build on their lead after finding themselves at set point with a 14-10 lead in the final frame, but Erskine fought back to tie things a 14-all.
