SEASON RECAP: CAU Tennis Claims 2023 Regular Season Title, Finished SIAC Tournament in Fourth Place

ATLANTA, Ga. | The Clark Atlanta women's tennis team finished the season with a 15-6 overall record with an impressive 13-1 record in conference play during the regular season. The Lady Panthers were led by first-year head coach Roderick Slack, who took over just as the 2023 season began. 

Clark Atlanta opened the season with a non-conference home win over GSC opponent Shorter University on February 4. The Lady Panthers took down the Hawks, 6-1, to open the season. CAU returned to the courts just three days later to take down Peach Belt foe Georgia Southwestern, 5-2, at home. 

The Lady Panther saw their first two setbacks of the season as they fell to No. 6 Xavier University of Lousiana, 4-0, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Clark Atlanta then returned home on Monday, February 13, to suffer a 7-0 loss at the hands of Georgia College & State University.

The Lady Panthers started their conference slate by going 3-0 in the first SIAC Mini Round-Up in Savannah, Georgia. Clark Atlanta picked up wins over Tuskegee, Fort Valley, and Savannah State to start conference play. 

During the following week, CAU tennis headed to the SIAC Round-Up #1 in Mobile, Alabama. The Lady Panthers proved to be dominant once again as they went 5-0 during the event. CAU recorded wins against Lane College, Savannah State, Albany State, Benedict, and Spring Hill to wrap up the weekend.

In the final SIAC Round-Up of the season, the Lady Panthers went 5-1 after starting the tournament 5-0. CAU logged wins against Fort Valley, Albany State, Lane College, Benedict, and Spring Hill before suffering their first conference loss of the season to Tuskegee to finish the event.

Clark Atlanta claimed the 2023 Regular Season title and enter the SIAC tournament as the No. 1 overall seed. The Lady Panthers faced the No. 4 seed Benedict Tigers in round one, suffering a narrow 4-2 defeat to the defending champions. After the loss, CAU was set to face No. 2 Tuskegee in the third-place bracket where fell, 4-3, to their conference foe.

The 15-6 record is the best since posting a 16-4 record during the 2019 campaign where they won the SIAC Conference Championship.
