Late Second-Half Push Not Enough as Clark Atlanta Suffers First Loss to Spring Hill

Andrew Stewarts posts a season-high 28 point performance

MOBILE, Ala. – Andrew Stewart scored a season-high 28 points followed by Chris Martin with 25 points, but the effort wasn't enough as Clark Atlanta suffered their first loss of the season to Spring Hill by a narrow 94-93 margin on Saturday afternoon inside the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center. With the loss, Clark Atlanta picks drops to 6-1 and 0-1 in conference play.

Shemani Fuller scored nine of Clark Atlanta's first 14 points to give the Panthers an early 14-9 lead just seven minutes into Saturday's contest. Spring Hill retook the lead at 17-16, but Jalen Nesmith laid in a score to regain the advantage (18-16). Both squads traded scores back and forth until Spring Hill held a narrow 42-40 lead going into halftime.

Spring Hill came out of the intermission with a purpose as they mounted a 15-point lead over Clark Atlanta with 8:48 to play in regulation. Andrew Stewart scored 11 points down the stretch to give Clark Atlanta new life and cut the deficit to two points (87-85) with a knockdown three-pointer at the 2:22 mark in the second half.

Demetrius Headspeth and Jalen Williams combined for four quick points to give Clark Atlanta an 89-87 advantage with just over a minute to play in regulation. Spring Hill's Walter Peggs Jr. sunk a three-pointer to put the Badgers back in front 90-89. However, the undeterred Demetrius Headspeth made go-ahead layups on back-to-back drives to put CAU in front 93-92 with one second left to play.

Unfortunately, a late foul by Silas Mason put the Badgers at the line where they knocked down a pair of free throws to down the Panthers 94-93, giving Clark Atlanta their first loss of the season.

Andrew Stewart led the way in scoring for Clark Atlanta with a season-high 28 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field, 4-of-6 from three-point range, and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe to pace the Panthers. Chris Martin added 25 points followed by Shemani Fuller with 13 points and Demetrius Headspeth with 11 points.

Despite the loss, Clark Atlanta outscored Spring Hill in the paint 42-30.
