Martin Drops 37 Points to Push CAU Past Montevallo in Double Overtime

Panthers improve to 3-0 on the season

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Chris Martin paced the Clark Atlanta Panthers (3-0, 0-0 SIAC) with a game-high 37 points to push CAU to a 121-116 double-overtime victory over the Montevallo Falcons on Friday night (Nov. 17) inside the Student Activity Center in Montevallo, Alabama. With the win, Clark Atlanta improved to their first 3-0 start since 2017-18 and landed five players in double-figure scoring.

Shemani Fuller paced the Panthers early scoring 10 of CAU's first 12 points to give Clark Atlanta a 12-8 lead five minutes into the contest. The Falcons stole the lead from the Panthers with a 10-0 scoring run to take an 18-12 advantage at the 11:56 mark in the first half.

Chris Martin drained a pair of free throws at the end of the first half before Montevallo knocked down a jumper to head into the intermission with a 46-43 lead over Clark Atlanta.

Just five minutes into the second half, Shemani Fuller threw down a dunk to regain the lead 57-56 over the Falcons. Both teams traded scores evenly until Xavier Griffth drained a jumper to put the Panthers in front 85-82 with six minutes left to play in regulation. Martin and Elijah Stewart combined for six of CAU's final 13 points down the stretch but the Panthers found themselves knotted at 98-all at the end of regulation.

Montevallo struck first in the first overtime but Chris Martin responded with four quick points to put Clark Atlanta ahead 104-100 with just over a minute left to play in the extra period. Andrew Stewart chipped in a jumper followed by a free throw from Martin, but the scoring effort wasn't enough as Montevallo forced a second overtime with a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left.

The Falcons jumped out to a 110-109 lead before Kharye Cayne threw down a dunk to regain the lead at 111-110 with 3:20 left to play. The Panthers outscored the Falcons 10-6 down the stretch to outlast Montevallo 121-116 in double overtime.

Clark Atlanta dominated Montevallo in the paint 80-50 while also outrebounding them 50-42 on the boards. As a team, CAU shot 53% from the field and a season-high 40% from behind the arc.

Chris Martin led all scorers with 37 points to eclipse 1,000 career points in his collegiate tenure. Martin shot 10-of-17 from the floor and 17-of-23 from the charity stripe in the win. Shemani Fuller added 23 points with nine rebounds and two steals on the night.
