Newson Nets Third 100-Yard Performance, Panthers Fall to Central State on Homecoming

Panther drop to 0-8 on the season

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Clark Atlanta University football team (0-8, 0-6 SIAC) dropped another conference match to the Central State Marauders (3-5, 2-4 SIAC) 48-21 at Saturday's homecoming game inside Panther Stadium. 

Despite the loss, quarterback Heath Williams Jr. (Clarksville, Tenn.) threw for 218 yards with 17 completions on 30 attempts and one touchdown in the loss. Running back Jeremiah Gibbs (Irondale, Ala.) led the rushing attack for CAU with 83 yards on 11 rushes for one touchdown on the day.

Wide receiver Devion Newson (Decatur, Ga.) registered his third 100-yard receiving performance this season after catching six passes for 121 yards against the Marauders.

Quarterback Daquan Nelson (James Island, S.C.) found the endzone for the first time this season on an 11-yard rush in the fourth quarter. 

Gibbs gave CAU their only lead of the day on a 16-yard rushing touchdown to take a 7-3 advantage at the top of the second quarter. 

Clark Atlanta's lead soon diminished as Central State scored 17 unanswered points to head into the intermission with a 20-7 lead over the Panthers.

Central State's lead grew to 34-7 before wide receiver Kendell Wimberly (Atlanta, Ga.) fielded an 11-yard touchdown pass with nine minutes left in the third quarter. 

The Marauders tacked on two more touchdowns in the second half to escape with a 48-21 win on Clark Atlanta's homecoming. 

On the offensive end, Clark Atlanta was able to put up 403 yards of total offense and win the first down battle 22-21. 

Defensively, Gregory Kemp (Chicago, Ill.) and Aderrius Barron (Barnesville, Ga.) led with five total tackles each.

Clark Atlanta will hit the road next Saturday, October 28, as they head to Tuskegee, Alabama to take on the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. CT.
