Panthers Host Savannah State Tonight

As the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season winds down, the Clark Atlanta University Panthers host Savannah State tonight at 8 p.m. inĀ  L.S. Epps Gymnasium in a game that will be important towards tournament seeding.Ā

Students and fans ARE allowed inside Epps Gymnasium tonight.Ā  The game can also be viewed live atĀ https://www.facebook.com/clarkatlantapanthers.

The Panthers (9-13, 4-10 SIAC) sit in the fifth spot in the SIAC East Division race while Savannah State (9-11, 6-7 SIAC) are in the third spot. With four regular season games to play after this one, every contest will be important for both teams as the team in the third-place spot doesn't have to play on the tournament's first day, Monday, Feb. 28.Ā

CAU is coming off a win over fourth-place Albany State Monday night, a game in which leading scorer Chris Martin didn't play.Ā  Martin, who leads the team in scoring (19 points per game) and rebounding (seven rebounds per game), has missed the past two contests with an injury and is a game-time decision tonight.Ā  Jalen Williams (15 ppg, 6.6 rpg) has been the second part of the Dyanmic Duo all season and is averaging 23 points in his last two games.Ā  Shannon Smith has stepped up his game lately, as he is averaging 20 points per game over the last four games.Ā  Smith has 23 against Albany State Monday, 19 against Morehouse last Saturday, and 23 against Morehouse last Thursday.Ā Ā

Savannah State is coming off a two-point loss to Benedict Monday winning their previous two games.Ā  The Tigers defeated Clark Atlanta 85-67 on Jan. 26 in Savannah.Ā  Ā

The Tigers are led by three players who are averaging double figures in scoring - Marcus Scott (12.9 points per game), Trey DeLoach (11.1 ppg), and Avery Joyner (15.2 ppg in 12 games).Ā  Ā The three combined for 46 points and 12 rebounds in the first meeting of the two teams.Ā

After tonight's game, the Panthers are home on Saturday when they host Edwdard Waters at 2 p.m. in L.S. Epps Gymnasium.Ā
