CAU Falls 92-57 at Savannah State

The Clark Atlanta University Lady Panthers couldn't overcome a slow start as they fell to No. 22 Savannah State 92-57 Monday in Savannah, Ga.

Savannah State (14-0, 8-0 SIAC) remains undefeated and extended their lead in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's East Division to two games over second-place Benedict.  Clark Atlanta (4-11, 4-3 SIAC) is in fourth place, a half-game behind third-place Albany State.

Monday, the Lady Panthers suffered through a first quarter in which they only made three baskets, falling behind 31-9 at the end of the quarter.  The Tigers had four 3-pointers during the quarter.

The lead grew to as many as 31 points in the second quarter as CAU only had two more field goals in the quarter.  The Lady Panthers only hit 15 percent of their shots (5-for-30) in the first half as they fell behind 47-18 at the break.   Savannah State cooled off just a bit after their big first quarter but was 17-of-35 on their shots in the half.

The Savannah State lead ballooned to as many as 41 points twice in the second half, though CAU was only outscored 45-39 in the second half.

The Lady Panthers only hit 26 percent of their shots in the game, while hitting 2-of-14 3-point shots, both by Maegan Barkley.   Savannah State dominated the paint, outscoring CAU 52-24 inside an had 25 fast-break points to CAU's 12.

Reagan Jackson led CAU with 23 points. She also had six rebounds, four steals and three assists.  Jackson has scored in double figures in every game this season.  Corriana Evans had her third consecutive double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds.  She has had double digit scoring/rebounding efforts in five of her last six games. Barkley had eight points while Brianna Pope added six.

Bria Gibbs led three players in double figures for Savannah State with 22 points along with grabbing 18 rebounds. Azhana Maxwell had 15 points while Ta'Kyla Austin had 11.

The Lady Panthers are off until Monday when they host Albany State at 6 p.m. in L.S. Epps Gymnasium.
