West Georgia Edges Clark Atlanta 78-74 In Overtime

Reagan Jackson had a game-high 33 points, but it wasn't enough as Clark Atlanta fell to the University of West Georgia in overtime 78-74 Tuesday at L.S. Epps Gymnasium.

Clark Atlanta (0-3) came out firing in their home opener before big, loud crowd, leading by as many as 19 points in the first half. But West Georgia (1-1) went on a 28-9 run late in the second quarter to pull within four to make 36-32 with :55 seconds left before halftime.

CAU put their foot back on the pedal and got the lead back up to 13 after Brianna Pope's layup made it 62-49 with 1:12 left in the third quarter. Another Pope layup with 8:54 remaining made it 65-52 in the fourth quarter.

Then the Lady Panthers' shooting went cold – over the next ten shots over just more than seven minutes.  During that span, CAU also turned the ball over four times. West Georgia took advantage and took the lead with 1:40 left in the fourth quarter when Zaria Bankston's 3-pointer made it 66-65.

Jackson ended the Lady Panther drought with a layup that put CAU up by one at 67-66 with 34 seconds left, followed by Denise Stine's layup to put CAU up 69-66 with 19 seconds left.  But West Georgia's Tahya Campbell nailed a 3-pointer with nine seconds left in the quarter to tie the game, which then went into overtime.

In overtime, both teams traded the lead early in the extra quarter. Jackson one of two free throws with 1:20 remaining to put CAU ahead 74-73. Campbell then missed a 3-pointer for UWG, and Autum Morings grabbed the rebound with 1:05 remaining.

Eventually Denise Stine was fouled but missed two free throws with 47 seconds left.  Morings managed to grab the rebound and after a timeout, Stine wasn't able to connect on a layup with 34 seconds left. UWG's Sierra Carter followed up with a 3-pointer that put them back ahead 75-74 with 28 seconds left.

But on the subsequent CAU possession, Jackson turned the ball over and UWG was able to get a basket by Siera Carter to put them up 77-74 with seven seconds left.  Carter hit another free throw at the end as UWG got the win.

CAU out-rebounded UWG 53-45 and forced 21 turnovers (CAU had 17) by the Wolves. But while CAU hit 34 percent of their shots – including only three shots in the fourth quarter – UWG hit 42 percent of their baskets and 11 3-pointers.
