Lady Panthers Fall to LeMoyne Owen 58-53

The Clark Atlanta University Lady Panthers suffered another close loss, this time 58-53 to LeMoyne Owen College Saturday in L.S. Epps Gymnasium.

Clark Atlanta (0-4) have lost their four games by a total of just 17 points.

Saturday, the Panthers led LeMoyne Owen (2-4) early, 12-9 late in the first quarter after Corriana Evans' 3-pointer.  The Magicians regained the lead just before the end of the quarter and held it throughout the second period, leading by as many as 13 points after Jess Myers hit one of two free throws to make it 29-16 three minutes before halftime.

LeMoyne Owen led 39-27 at the half and maintained their lead in a third quarter in which both teams combined for only 15 points.

Tya Freeman's two free throws with 7:55 remaining gave the Magicians a 47-35 lead. But the Panthers fought back.  Reagan Jackson's 3-pointer with 2:51 left in the game capped a 9-1 Panther run that made the game closer than it had been since early in the second quarter.

Autum Morings' layup with 1:07 kept the game close at 52-48.  She was fouled on the play but missed the added free throw. CAU got the rebound but wasn't able to score.  The Magicians got a basket to extend the lead to six with 45 seconds left, however Jackson connected on another 3-pointer to make it 54-50 with 38 seconds left.

CAU missed two baskets and then fouled Myers who hit two free throws to make it 56-50 with 14 seconds left. Jackson to pull CAU to within three at 53-50 three seconds later, but two Lemoyne Owen free throws on the next possession put the game out of reach.

Three rough shooting quarters – 20 percent in the second quarter, 12 percent in the third, and 32 percent in the fourth – doomed CAU. The Lady Panthers hit just 26 percent of their shots on the day and were out-rebounded by LeMoyne Owen 56-38

Jackson led CAU with 15 points and grabbed four rebounds, made five steals and had two assists.  Maegan Barkley hit four 3-pointers and finished with 13 points. Morings finished with 11 rebounds, two points and one block. Evans had eight points and nine rebounds.  Kaia Barnett also had eight points, adding four rebounds, one steal and one assist.

The Magicians were led by Myers' 11 points while Patrisha Lollis finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Lady Panthers have Sunday off before they head to Alabama to take on Tuskegee Monday at 5:30 p.m.  CAU is back home after the Thanksgiving break when they host Central State on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m.
