CAU Women Lose Opener 70-69; Plays ECSU Today at 1 p.m.

Box Score A big Clark Atlanta lead evaporated late, allowing Johnson C. Smith to sneak past the Lady Panthers 70-69 Friday in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference/Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Challenge in Albany, Ga., Friday.

In the season opener for both teams, Clark Atlanta (0-1) was in control early, leading by 50-26 at halftime and holding Johnson C. Smith (1-0) to just 11 field goals by halftime.  CAU hit nearly 53 percent of their shots and were cruising early.

By the end of the third quarter, Clark Atlanta was up 60-37 and had led by as many as 28 points.

But the fourth quarter turned into a disaster for the Lady Panthers as they hit just four baskets and scored only nine points, while JCSU suddenly lit up offensively.  The Golden Bulls went 15-of-21 from the floor in the fourth quarter alone, outscoring CAU 33-9 to comeback and get the win.

Clark Atlanta out-rebounded JCSU 36-35, but turned the ball over 25 times.

CAU's Reagan Jackson finished with a game-high 21 points, hitting 8-of-19 shots.  She also had three assists and three steals.  In her first game in a CAU uniform, Corriana Evans had 12 points and three rebounds, while senior forward Autum Morings finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

JCSU had four players score in double figures, with Aubrianna Bonner leading them with 14 points and five rebounds, Ciara Harris had 13 points and six boards, and Randi Neal had 13 points and three rebounds. Shaniya Jones had 10 points and four rebounds.

Today, the Lady Panthers will take on Elizabeth City State University at 1 p.m. ECSU defeated home-standing Albany State 60-50 Friday.  The Vikings are led by their third-leading scorer from 2019-20 (the last season they competed before the Covid-19 pandemic) Naterria Luster who averaged 11.7 points and nine rebounds per game that season, and Sireann Pitts, who put up 7.6 points and six rebounds that same season.
