CAU Opens Baseball Season By Taking Two of Three From Rust

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 The Clark Atlanta University Panthers baseball team opened their 2020 season this past weekend by taking two of three games against Rust College at Bill Evans Field in College Park, Ga.

The weekend started out rough on a cold, Friday, Atlanta night as Clark Atlanta pitchers walked 11 hitters and hit ten batters in a 17-8 loss to the Bearcats.   Every Rust player who got in the game scored at least one run, with three Bearcats scoring three times each.  Daniel Gay took the loss for CAU

CAU's Calvin Butler had three hits for the Panthers, two of them doubles, driving in two runs and scoring twice.

In the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, CAU's Ryan Bevel scored on a wild pitch to lift Clark Atlanta to a 4-3 win over Rust.

CAU had led 3-1 after Khalil Manuel tripled in two runs in the fifth inning.  But Rust scored two runs on two hits in the top of the seventh to tie the game.

But in the bottom of the seventh, Bevel singled and moved to second on a fielder's choice.  A walk moved Bevel to third.  Then on a 2-1 count, Bevel scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch.

Bevel had two hits, drove in two runs and scored three times, while Manuel went 2-for-3 and driving in two runs. D'Artrey Brinson got the win for CAU.

The final game of the series didn't last long after CAU scored in three of four innings to win 4-1.  The game was called after four innings.

Rust got on the board first, with Claude Hayes driving in a run on a ground out.  In the bottom of the second, Jamari Stewart walked and eventually scored on Justice Page's single to tie the game.  Butler followed with a single that drove in Deandre Swift, giving CAU a 2-1 lead.  Gay scored on a wild pitch in the third and while Bevel singled and scored in the fourth.

Michael Fegins got the win for CAU, giving up just two hits and a run while striking out three.

The Panthers are back on the diamond Friday, Saturday and Sunday when they play in the Peachtree City Classic at Home Plate Field in Peachtree City, Ga.  The Panthers take on Fairmont State at 11 a.m. Friday, Kentucky State at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, and Stillman at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
