A late Clark Atlanta comeback fell short as the Lady Panthers fell to Albany State 67-63 Monday night in Albany, Ga.
Just two days after the Lady Panthers (6-13, 4-6 SIAC) defeated Montavallo, the fifth-ranked team in the NCAA South Region, CAU fell to a team in Albany State (4-15, 2-9 SIAC) that had lost six of their last seven games.
After breaking through a close game by pulling out to their biggest lead -seven points – late in the third quarter, the Lady Panthers last led 50-48 on
Reyana Miller's 3-pointer with 9:04 remaining. Albany State went on a 5-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 55-50 lead.
Miller then hit three free throws and added a jumper, while
Autum Morings hit a free throw to pull CAU back within one at 57-56 with 4:21 left. Ciera Norman extended that lead to seven points over by converting three CAU fouls into six successful free throws, the last coming with 2:53 left, making the score 63-56.
CAU made one last run as Morings hit a jumper,
Naomi Holloway followed with a layup, and Miller hit two free throws as Clark Atlanta was down by just one, 63-62 with 49 seconds left. But Alexandria James hit a jumper for ASU and CAU was unable to hit another basket from the floor. Norman sealed the win with two more free throws in the last ten seconds.
Miller led CAU with 16 points, along with five rebounds and three assists. Holloway finished with 12 points, four assists and two rebounds, while
Courtney Hall added ten points and four rebounds. Morings had nine points and 11 rebounds for CAU.
James led Albany State with 24 points, while Norman had 16 points after hitting 11-of-12 free throws. Alexis Smith had nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Clark Atlanta next heads to South Carolina where they will take on SIAC East front-runners Benedict on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. The Lady Panthers return to L.S. Epps Gymnasium on Monday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. when they take on Paine College.
