In a game where both teams suffered through a rough shooting day, a late Clark Atlanta comeback came up short as the Lady Panthers fell to LeMoyne-Owen 55-50 Saturday at L.S. Epps Gymnasium.
With 38 seconds remaining, the Lady Panthers (3-10, 2-3 SIAC) were within a basket at 53-30 after
Courtney Hall was fouled when she hit a short jump shot and got to the free throw line.
But Hall missed the free throw. LeMoyne-Owen (6-4, 3-2 SIAC) got a free throw from Amil Mitchell four seconds later to extend their lead to four.
Reagan Jackson missed a late layup and the Magicians' Lamontazia Blair added another free throw on the ensuing possession to seal the win.
Clark Atlanta had jumped out ahead of LeMoyne-Owen early, leading 17-4 with a little over three minutes remaining the first quarter. The Magicians were able to end the quarter by slicing the lead to six with a 7-0 run as they headed into the second quarter.
The Lady Panthers were able to hold on to their lead by halftime at 26-24, but they hit only two baskets in the second quarter, hitting only 11 percent of their shots. Things weren't much better for LeMoyne-Owen as they hit 2-of-14 of their shots.
Both teams fared a little better in the third quarter with the Magicians taking over the lead early on Gabbie Morgan's 3-pointer which made it 27-24. The Magicians held the lead most of the quarter and led by three going into the fourth after Morgan's two free throws made it 42-39.
The Magicians never relinquished the lead again, though CAU kept it close and made their run late in the fourth.
LeMoyne-Owen finished the game by hitting only 26 percent of their shots and just one 3-pointer. CAU hit 24 percent of their shots and turned the ball over 20 times. The win was the fifth straight for LeMoyne-Owen.
Autum Morings led CAU with 14 points while also grabbing a career-high 20 rebounds. Jackson had 12 points, five rebounds, three steals and an assist.
Nailah-Mawusi Mitchell had eight points and five rebounds, while
Reyana Miller finished the day with seven points, four assists, three rebounds and a steal.
Lamontazia Blair led LeMoyne-Owen with 21 points, eight rebounds, six steals, two blocks and two assists. Morgan had 17 points while Patrisha Lollis grabbed a team-high ten rebounds.
Clark Atlanta is now off the Christmas and New Year's break. They return to the floor on Jan. 4 when they visit Central State and Jan. 6 when they head to Kentucky State. They are next at home on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 2 p.m. when they host Fort Valley State.
