Clark Atlanta Holds Off Miles 69-64

Romaine Thomas had 20 points as Clark Atlanta held off Miles 69-64 Thursday at L.S. Epps Gymnasium.

The win was Clark Atlanta's (3-9, 3-1 SIAC) second consecutive victory and their third in the past five games.  The win also ended Miles' (7-2, 2-1 SIAC) four-game winning streak.

Thursday, the Panthers twice led by as many as nine points in the first half, the second after Tyler Singleton hit two free throws with 4:50 left before halftime, making it 28-19.  Ryan Calhoun's jumper just before the half ended capped an 11-5 Miles run that pulled them within three at 33-30 at halftime.

Miles kept the pressure on as they used another run – this time outscoring CAU 15-5 over seven minutes midway through the second half - to take their biggest lead, 50-46 after a Nathan Ferguson 3-pointer with 11:41 remaining.

CAU bounced back, getting a 3-pointer from Thomas and then a layup by Colin Bell to retake the lead two minutes later at 51-50.   That lead grew to seven points after Elijah Stewart's layup and free throw with 2:18 left giving Clark Atlanta a 65-58 lead.  But the CAU defense only allowed Miles to get one more basket the rest of the way as the Panthers earned the win.

Clark Atlanta hit 60 percent of their shots in the second half, while holding Miles to only 34 percent from the floor.

Thomas led CAU with 20 points, seven rebounds, four blocks, four assists and a steal.   Singleton finished with 16 points, four rebounds and two assists, while Stewart had ten points, three rebounds and an assist. Traylen Warren added nine points for CAU.

Nathan Ferguson led Miles with 18 points, while Jelani Gayle-Watson added 15.

Clark Atlanta is back on the court one more time before the Christmas break when they host LeMoyne-Owen College Saturday at 4 p.m. in L.S. Epps Gymnasium.  Admission is free.
