Clark Atlanta Wins Third Straight, Defeating LeMoyne-Owen 66-51

Romaine Thomas had his fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 19 points and 14 rebounds, as Clark Atlanta won their third consecutive game in defeating LeMoyne-Owen 66-51 Saturday at L.S. Epps Gymnasium.

Clark Atlanta (4-9, 4-1 SIAC) halted a five-game LeMoyne-Owen (6-4, 3-2 SIAC) win streak that dated back to Dec. 7.

Saturday, Clark Atlanta eased out to a couple of early leads in the first half but LeMoyne-Owen managed to take a brief 23-20 after two consecutive jumpers by Jaquan Lawrence midway through the half.  But over a two-minute span, Elijah Stewart hit three free throws and Thomas had a tip-in that put the Panthers ahead 25-23 with 5:57 left before halftime.

It turned out to be a lead they would never relinquish.

After taking a nine-point lead into halftime, LeMoyne-Owen whittled the lead down to five points after Tory Mason hit a free throw to make it 48-43 with 11:03 remaining.   But the Clark Atlanta defense only allowed LeMoyne-Owen two baskets over the next seven minutes while running the lead back up to 11 points on Stewart's basket with four minutes left, making it 58-47.  The Panthers seized control of the game, leading by as many as 17 points to get the win.

To go with his 19 points and 14 rebounds, Thomas also had three assists and a steal for CAU.  Stewart finished with 17 points, including four 3-pointers.  Tyler Singleton had 11 points, six rebounds and five assists.  Maximo Guillermo added eight points, five rebounds and two blocks.

LeMoyne-Owen was led by Lawrence's 16 points, with Kenneth Perkins adding 14.

The Panthers are now off for the Christmas and New Year's break.  They return to the floor, but on the road, when they visit Central State on Jan. 4 and then Kentucky State on Jan. 6.  They return home for their first SIAC East Division game on Saturday, Jan. 11 against Fort Valley State at 4 p.m.
