Four Panthers scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as Clark Atlanta fell to the University of West Alabama 65-54 on the road Thursday.
Clark Atlanta (0-6) never led but were able to cut a West Alabama (3-1) 20-point lead to under ten before the Panthers ran out of time.
Four minutes into the game, Clark Atlanta's
Tyler Singleton hit a 3-pointer that that tied the game at 5-5. But West Alabama streaked to a 17-2 run over the next seven minutes, going up 22-7 with just under nine minutes left before halftime. UWA ended up leading 36-17 at the half as the Panthers struggled on offense, hitting only eight baskets and one 3-pointer in the first half. CAU also turned the ball over 14 times in the half.
At the beginning of the second half, CAU quickly cut into the lead when
Traylen Warren hit a 3-pointer and a free throw, along with two baskets by
Calvin White to make the score 36-25 with 17:03 remaining. UWA held off CAU's spurt and got the lead back up to 20 points – 52-32 - midway through the half. CAU chipped away at the lead, getting it under ten at 63-54 with 45 seconds left after a White 3-pointer, but that's as close as the Panthers would get.
Clark Atlanta out-rebounded UWA 35-31 and held the Tigers to 37 percent shooting in the second half. But CAU turned the ball over 20 times with West Alabama cashing in on those miscues, outscoring CAU 31-15 in points off turnovers.
White led CAU with 17 points while grabbing five rebounds. Singleton finished with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Warren had ten points, four rebounds and an assist.
Shannon Smith added ten points.
UWA's LaJuan Hardy finished with a triple double – 23 points, ten rebounds and ten assists.
Next up for the Panthers is a big rematch from earlier this week when CAU visits Alabama-Huntsville on Wednesday, Nov. 27. A 30-point Clark Atlanta lead slipped away later to UAH Monday as the Chargers won a thriller 74-71 L.S. Epps Gymnasium. The Panthers return home after the Thanksgiving holiday when they host Lane on Monday, Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. and then Montevallo on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 8 p.m.
