Clark Atlanta had three score in double-figures, with
Romaine Thomas getting a double-double, but the Panthers fell to No. 8 Alabama-Huntsville 79-65 Wednesday on the road.
Just six days after a tough loss in Atlanta to the nationally-ranked Chargers, Clark Atlanta (0-7) again were close early, behind only four after
Elijah Stewart's jumper capped an 18-2 run that made it 26-22 with five minutes left in the first half.
But Alabama-Huntsville (6-0) went on a run of their own, outscoring Clark Atlanta 16-3 to push the lead back up to double figures at 38-25. A
Calvin White basket and a
Tyler Singleton 3-pointer pulled the Panthers back under ten at 38-30 at halftime.
CAU whittled that lead down to two midway through the second half after a
Traylen Warren layup made it 52-50 with 11:34 remaining. But over the next four minutes, UAH was able to outscore CAU 15-2 to go up by 11 with just over seven minutes remaining. CAU was only able to get the lead under ten once before as the Chargers took control the rest of the way.
Despite a tough shooting day, Thomas finished with his third double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Singleton had 11 points, five assists and three rebounds while Warren had ten points and three rebounds and an assist. White had six points and six rebounds and Stewart had seven points, two steals and two assists.
Sam Orf, who led Alabama-Huntsville's comeback win over the Panthers last week, led the Chargers with 13 points and four rebounds, while Malik Cook-Stroupe had ten points. CAU was able to hold UAH's leading scorer and the nation's fourth-leading rebounder JJ Kaplan to ten points and six rebounds. He had been averaging 13 rebounds per game.
The Panthers return to L.S. Epps Gymnasium this Monday, Dec. 2 when they host SIAC West foe Lane College at 8 p.m. That game is part of a double-header when the Lady Panthers also host Lane at 6 p.m.
It's also a game where fans are being encouraged to wear all black for a special "Black Out" night at Epps Gymnasium.
