Clark Atlanta Falls Late to Alabama-Huntsville 74-71

The Clark Atlanta University Panthers led the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers for nearly 38 minutes Tuesday, but fell let to UAH, 74-71 in L.S. Epps Gymnasium.

Clark Atlanta (0-5) led by as many as 30 points – 49-19 with 1:26 left before halftime after Traylen Warren hit a 3-pointer and a free throw after being fouled on the shot.  But after CAU had hit 10 3-pointers in the first half to streak out to their big lead, UAH (3-0) hit eight 3-pointers and forced 11 turnovers in the second half.

Sam Orf's 3-pointer with 15:22 remaining pulled Alabama-Huntsville to within 14 of CAU at 54-40.

Romaine Thomas countered with a 3-pointer and a free throw, followed by a Shannon Smith layup to put CAU back up by 20 at 60-40.

A 14-2 UAH run again pulled the Chargers to within eight at 62-54 with just under ten minutes remaining.  That lead shrunk to three after JJ Kaplan's jumper – along with CAU going with out a field goal for nearly four minutes – made it 64-61.

UAH's comeback continued until Orf hit a free throw with 2:38 remaining to tie the game at 69-69.  Calvin White's layup 17 seconds later gave CAU their last lead, 71-69.

Max Shulman's 3-pointer put UAH in front, 72-71 with 2:08 left. Tyler Singleton missed a basket, followed by Orf stealing the ball from Thomas with under a minute left.

A missed UAH free throw gave CAU a chance as they missed two free throws that would have put the game away with 33 seconds left.  Thomas took the rebound and eventually Warren missed a shot by was fouled with five seconds left at the score still at 72-71.   But Warren missed two free throws and UAH got the rebound.    They hit two free throws to go up by three points at 74-71 with four seconds left.  A last second Thomas 3-pointer was unsuccessful.

The game came down to two distinctive halves for both teams: CAU hit just under 60 percent of their first-half shots and ten 3-pointers, along with only turning the ball over three times.  They forced UAH into seven turnovers and held them to just 30 percent shooting and just three 3-pointers in the half.

In the second half, CAU only hit seven baskets (31 percent), connected on just two 3-pointers and turned the ball over 11 times.  UAH went 17-of-28 from the floor (60.7 percent), hit eight 3-pointers and turned the ball over just four times.

Singleton led four Panthers in double figure scoring with 13 points.  He also had seven assists, five rebounds and a steal.  Calvin White had 12 points, five rebounds and an assist, while Thomas finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Ian Roach had ten points, including going 3-for-3 on 3-point shots.

Orf and Triston Chambers both had 17 points for UAH.  Orf scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half.
