The Clark Atlanta Panthers will host a rare Sunday game today when they take on Xavier University of New Orleans at 4 p.m. in L.S. Epps Gymnasium.
The Panthers (0-3) are coming off an 84-67 loss on the road at the University of Montevallo Thursday. In that game, just like the other two they've played so far this season against Barry University and Palm Beach Atlantic, CAU led most of the first half and part of the second half before falling late.
Sunday, they host XULA (5-3), an NAIA squad that defeated Columbus State 66-64 Saturday. Before that, the Gold Rush had lost three straight – one an exhibition loss to Southeastern Louisiana – after starting the season by winning four of their first five games.
XULA is led by forward William Loyd, a 6'5" senior who has led the Gold Rush in scoring in every game but one this season. Loyd had a season-high 30 points in their 85-84 loss to LeMoyne-Owen a week ago.
Last season, the Panthers defeated XULA 85-77 in New Orleans. This season, the Panthers are led by
Romaine Thomas, who leads CAU in scoring and rebounding, averaging 22 points and ten rebounds per game. Thomas, who had 15 points and ten rebounds against XULA last season, had 24 Monday in CAU's close, 84-76 loss to Palm Beach Atlantic.
