Jalisa Jones had her best day ever as a Lady Panther with 20 points as Clark Atlanta won their fourth straight game, defeating Carver College 67-58 Saturday in L.S. Epps Gymnasium.
On a tough shooting day, Clark Atlanta (6-15, 4-7 SIAC) had to battle hard against a scrappy Carver College team that only dressed seven players in the non-conference game in front of a big crowd at Epps.
The Lady Panthers led by as many as nine points in the first quarter after
Jamila Mitchell's free throw made it 15-6 last in the period.
While the Lady Panthers pretty much maintained their lead throughout the rest of the first half, Carver kept things close, pulling to within three just before halftime on Nancy Jonathan's layup made it 29-26.Â
Reyana Miller followed with a basket for CAU, along with two free throws and a jumper by Jones to give the Lady Panthers a 35-28 lead at halftime.
The Lady Cougars came out strong at the beginning of the third quarter, erasing the deficit and taking their first lead when Dorian Sharp's basket made it 37-36 Carver midway through the quarter. Â But the Lady Panthers roared back.Â
Reagan Jackson's 3-pointer ignited a 14-2 run that put CAU back in front 50-38 just before the end of the third quarter. Â Â Even though Carver got the lead down to four early in the final period, Clark Atlanta held serve and stayed in control to take the victory.
But it was a rough shooting day for the Lady Panthers who hit only 25 percent of their shots all day, compared to Carver who shot 39 percent from the floor. Clark Atlanta was also out-rebounded by Carver 50-49, though CAU forced 21 Carver turnovers.
Jones led four Lady Panthers in double figures with 20 points, along with eight rebounds and four steals. Jackson had 17 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two assists.Â
Nailah-Mawusi Mitchell finished with 11 points and nine rebounds, while Miller added ten points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Khashahmi Smith led Carver with 13 points.
The Lady Panthers, who are a half-game out of second place in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's East Division, will now dive back into conference play when they take on Fort Valley State University Saturday, Feb. 2 in Fort Valley. Fort Valley (4-15, 4-7 SIAC) is tied with CAU for third in the SIAC East behind Albany State (5-15, 4-6 SIAC) and division-leading Benedict (15-4, 10-0 SIAC). The Lady Panthers defeated Fort Valley 69-53 on Jan. 21.
