Jackson’s Lay-In With 13 Seconds Left Lifts CAU Over Albany State 71-70

Reagan Jackson's layup with 13 seconds remaining lifted Clark Atlanta University to a 71-70 victory over Albany State University Saturday at L.S. Epps Gymnasium.

The Lady Panthers (4-15, 3-7 SIAC) had trailed Albany State (5-14, 4-5 SIAC) by 21 points early in the second half.

The lead was 18 points heading into the fourth quarter when the Lady Panthers started their big run.  Jackson scored 14 of CAU's first 19 points of the quarter, including a free throw with 4;21 remaining to pull the Lady Panthers to within two at 60-58.   ASU pulled away slightly, twice leading by seven, the second time with 2:12 left after a basket by Alexandria James made it 69-62.

The Lady Panthers took over the game from there.

Nailah-Mawusi Mitchell hit a jumper and then a free throw to cut the lead to four with 1:19 left. Reyana Miller cut it to two after her basket of Mitchell's missed free throw made 69-67 with 1:16 left.

James fouled Jackson with just under a minute remaining.  Jackson then tied the game with two free throws.

Ashley Johnson gave Albany State a 1-point lead with 39 seconds left with a free throw that made it 70-69.  She missed her second free throw, with Jazmin Smith grabbing the rebound for CAU.

After a timeout, Jackson took the ball at midcourt, weaved her way around the court and into the lane with a spin before dropping the game-winning shot with 13 seconds left. Jamila Mitchell blocked an ASU shot at the end that put the game away.

Jackson finished with 28 points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals for Clark Atlanta.  Nailah-Mawusi Mitchell had 18 points, six rebounds, and a steal, while Jazmin Smith finished with ten points.

James, who hit 7-of-10 of her shots in the first half, finished with 16 points and five rebounds to lead Albany State.

The Lady Panthers return to Epps on Monday, Jan. 21, Martin Luther King Jr. Day when they host Fort Valley State University at 6 p.m.  CAU next plays the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, Jan. 26 when they play Carver College at 4 p.m.  That game will be followed by the CAU men's game against Morehouse at 6 p.m.
